An introduction to garment making for those who know how to use a sewing machine and are ready to progress onto reading patterns and constructing garments.
Classes are held at my home sewing cabin in Cheam, Surrey. Details and directions are provided with booking confirmation.
The Project:
During this 5 week course you will make a pair of cotton pyjama trousers. We will be using the Jaimie (womenswear) or Joe (menswear) pattern by Tilly and the Buttons. These trousers are an easy fit with elasticated waist. We will be adding a pocket and decorative tie at the front.
These patterns are available in the following sizes:
- Jaimie Womenswear pattern: UK4 - 34 (Waist 34" - 53")
- Joe Menswear pattern: 28" - 46" Waist
Skills Taught:
- How to read a sewing pattern.
- How to measure yourself and choose your size.
- How to prepare and cut fabric.
- How to sew and finish a seam.
- How to make a basic waistband.
- How to finish a basic hem.
- How to make an in-seam pocket.
Dates: Tuesday 7th January - Tuesday 4th February (5 Weeks)
Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm (2 hours)
Level: Beginner garment-maker. You should be able to wind a bobbin, thread a machine, do a straight stitch, do a back-stitch, follow a seam allowance.

Class Size: 4 - 6
Price Includes:
- 10 hours of sewing tuition divided across 5, 2-hour lessons with a class size of 4 to 6 students.
- A Tilly and the Buttons Jaimie/Joe Sewing pattern
- A fabric kit containing fabric and notions needed for the project. A choice of fabrics will be offered prior to the start of the class. All fabrics will be good quality 100% cotton.
- Use of all machines and tools.
- Gutermann sew-all Threads.
- Tea, coffee and light refreshments.
- 10% off all any additional Jaimie/Joe Pyjama making kits for the duration of the course should you wish to duplicate the project at home.

Minimum Class Size:
The minimum class size for this course is 4 participants. Should this number not be reached, the class will not be able to run. Flying Bobbins will strive to find a solution, however, in some cases, classes may have to be cancelled due to low numbers. You will be kept informed at all times and a full refund will be given for any cancelled courses.
Cancellation Policy & Absence:
Full payment for the class shall be taken at point of booking to secure your place.
Should you wish to cancel, please let me know as soon as possible. Cancellations made less than 3 weeks in advance will be charged at 50%.
If you can't make one of the classes, every effort will be made to accommodate you on another class, however this cannot be guaranteed. No refund will be given for missed classes.
In the unlikely event that the class cannot go ahead due to teacher absence, alternative arrangements will be made and a range of dates will be offered to the class. A refund for the missed class will be given where no suitable alternative can be arranged.
Illness:
As we enter the cooler months, it is normal for a few bugs to be doing the rounds. If you are unwell, please do not attend the class, this is for the sake of the other students. A mop-up session will be provided for classed missed due to illness at the end of each term.
